The Unarchiver for Mac, which you can download for free, is a fantastic replacement for the built-in archive utility. Read our review here.

The default archive utility in OS X on Mac is great, but its functionality is also rather limited. Therefore, we decided to take a look at The Unarchiver, which is a free and open-source replacement. It supports a wide range of popular formats, which you can read more about here.

Basically, it works exactly like you would expect, and installing it is (ironically) done by extracting the ZIP file and dragging it to your applications folder. To extract a file, you can just click on it, like you would do with the built-in utility. What separates The Unarchiver is the added functionality, such as the ability to extract archives in new folders or specifying another destination. You can access these settings by going to the preferences.

One thing we did notice, is that it took a second longer to extract the ZIP archive when installing this application than it did with the built-in utility. However, we did not get to test The Unarchiver further with much larger files, but it is probably worth taking a look at if you are working with big files.

Personally, I have never used many of these utilities on Mac, but since The Unarchiver is a fantastic free and open-source replacement for the default archive utility, we recommend it to all of our Mac users. It is also available in the Mac App Store.

The Unarchiver for Mac is a much more capable replacement for 'Archive Utility.app', the built-in archive extraction software on macOS. The Unarchiver is designed to handle many more formats than Archive Utility, and to better fit in with the design of the Finder. It can also handle filenames in foreign character sets, created with non-English versions of other operating systems. I personally find it useful for opening Japanese archives, but it should handle many other languages just as well.
It is very simple to use and install - simply copy it into your Applications folder, or whereever else you might prefer, and then set it as the default program for archive files. This can be done either from the preferences panel in the program itself or in the Finder. Supported file formats include Zip, Tar-GZip, Tar-BZip2, RAR, 7-zip, LhA, StuffIt and many other old and obscure formats. The Unarchiver for macOS, a quick and free way to unpack your files!
